Franz Josef von Bayern is the great nephew of Ludwig III, the last Bavarian King. Instead of leading a jet-setting life, he set off as a missionary in northern Kenya near lake Turkana. This is where reporter, Gunther Kast met him.

Illeret is a very hot dusty place at the end of the world, with prevailing desert winds beating against round huts inhabited by the Dassanech, not far from Lake Turkana, the World’s largest desert lake. Having grown up in Bavaria and trained as a benedictine monk, Franz Josef von Bayern moved to Kenya, where first he worked with people in the slums of Nairobi and subsequently came to Illeret, the border of Ethiopia and Kenya.
