The Fallen Rangers Fund for Widows supports the families of Rangers lost in their line of duty.
Park management have identified almost all of the fallen Rangers’ families since regional conflict inception in 1991. Since all donations to the fund are allocated to the widows, the Virunga Foundation has been able to provide support, employment and training to fallen rangers’ families. Additional support measures include the provision of a ranger’s full salary to their widow for 6 months, after which the widows receive a pension. Fallen rangers’ families are also provided with free medical services.
Further funding aims to ensure that a permanent endowment can be provided for these families, covering their base subsistence cost, an educational allowance for children, and family medical support.
